How to get Cheaper Hawaii Tickets
So you are looking for cheaper Hawaii tickets and airfare discounts. Well here are a few things that you should know about airlines, ticket pricing in order to make the right decision where and when to buy your cheap Hawaii ticket.
Ticket prices are constantly changing (even while you read this article) and this is because they are determined by three things:
- How many tickets are available?
- How many people want to buy these tickets?
- How many different airlines are competing in the market?
Here are a few suggestions on how to get cheaper Hawaii tickets:
Flexible departure date:
The basic rule is that the more flexible you are in terms of airline, departure date, stop-overs etc. the cheaper it will get for you. Many of the booking websites like Expedia.com, Cheaptickets.com, Travelocity.com offer flexible traveling date options. So you should always check them. Sometimes you save a bunch of money by just changing one day of your itinerary.
Check neighboring airports:
Sometimes you get cheaper Hawaii tickets if your flight departures or lands at a nearby airports. So if you want to leave from San Jose, you might also check Oakland and vice versa. Always remember that time is money and that driving costs money too. So make sure the extra travel is less than the price reduction.Search early:
This is not just to get a feel for the market, but also that you may find special deals that are only available if you book a certain amount of time in advance.
Keep Checking:
If you have the time you can spend a lot of time checking. I mean you can turn this into a science project, but if after a few weeks of searching you safed $50 bucks, it was probably not worth it. Hey you are going to Hawaii, so don't be too chintzy.Check for age discounts:
If you are a senior, or a student you should look for special rates that some of the airlines offer. Ask a travel agent.Check with the airlines directly:
Sometimes it makes sense to check with the airlines that are servicing Hawaii directly. All of them have websites and offer online booking. Problem is there is a lot of them. Checking can be quite tedious, but I always check at least Hawaiian Airlines. I like their service and they always gave me good offers.Hawaii has with Honolulu an international airport, so many different airlines come here. New Zealand Airlines, Quantas Airlines, Japanese Airlines, Air Canada, Continental Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, American Trans Air, Alaska Airlines, and also the Hawaiian companies Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines. I show in the video below how to deal with the companies.
Collect miles (frequent flyer member):
If you are not already a member of a frequent flyer program then this is the time you should start. This will not give you cheaper Hawaii tickets this time, but maybe next time you come around.Join a travel club:
Travel clubs give special incentives to their member. This means if you are a person who likes to travel a lot, you should consider joining one of them.Choose midweek day:
Wednesdays and Thursdays are usually the cheapest days to fly although there is no set rule, because it always depends on demand and supply. Usually there are no cheaper Hawaii tickets around holidays, but I was able to find some really good offers even right around Christmas. All just a matter of how early you start to search.Bumping:
Because of the high rate of people not showing up for their seat, airlines have a tendency to overbook their flights. If everybody shows up, not enough seats are available on the plane and so they are asking people to volunteer their seat to get on a later flight. If you are flexible with that they sometimes give you an additional free flight, hotel or whatever. As soon as you get to the airport let them know that you want to be on the top of the volunteers list. Ask them what the incentive would be.Courier services:
Courier services are probably the cheapest way to get around. You are basically offering to only bring carry-ons on the plane and give the space that would be available for your luggage to a company, who needs this space to deliver something. You usually have nothing to do with the company items. You could sometimes get more than 50% off your ticket, but there a the following hooks to it.- you have to be completely flexible about your departure date.
- They can cancel on you with no compensation
- It is hard to book hotels, tours and other things without knowing when you go
- Sometimes you have to also commit to a return flight for the company, so your stay might not be as long as you want.
Booking through a travel agency:
Travel agents have developed their tricks to survive in this business and when you are looking for more than just a flight you might be better off with a travel agent. Travel agents will tell you about special deals, you can discuss pros and cons of certain options, a dynamic that you will not be able to have on the internet. Remember every change in the inquiry will need a new search on the internet, while with a travel agent you can gradually find what feels satisfying to you, without starting over from scratch for just one little detail.Good travel agents with a lot of business will be able to give you advice, especially if they are doing this already for a while. Of course you can do this on the internet too, but it will always depend on how much time you would like to invest .
Sometimes they can offer great hotel deals even if their flight offers would be higher than what you find on discount travel sites.
Downside of the travel agencies: Because of the cuts of the commissions for the agents, they sometimes will not want to spend a hell a lot of time with you. Plus they might not give you the best offer, when they know that they can sell a more expensive one. So do your homework, and tell the agent that you can get a much better price on the net. Then you will see if he is still interested in making a deal with you or not.
For the last few years I did all my booking over the internet.
